Free Programs to Learn About Alternative Energy Choices<

Workshops are free to non-formal, formal & Pre-service educators & youth group leaders.
They will be held at The Interpretive Center, on SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry’s Huntington Wildlife Forest in Newcomb, NY
 

DATES & WORKSHOP TOPICS:

1) Nov 30, 2010, 9:00am – 12:30pm: A Solar Kit for the Classroom (for educators of grades 3 to 12): Become familiar with solar energy concepts. Test out the experiments and give your students the tools they need to understand solar technologies.  This workshop supports NYSERDA’s School Power…Naturally 15 Solar Kit lessons found at www.SchoolPowerNaturally.org. Various lessons are suited to different grade levels among grades 3 through 12. At the workshop educators will receive: Engaging, hands-on science and engineering activities that support NYS Learning Standards and Core Curriculum, addressing specific performance indicators; and free solar energy education kit and support materials for your classroom, center, or institution.
 

2) Nov 30, 2010, 1:30 – 4:30pm: Junior Solar Sprint (for educators of grades 5 -8 and adaptable to high school): Learn how to teach kids in this highly engaging project where they design & build mini model solar electric cars & learn numerous physical science, environmental science, solar energy and craftsmanship in the process. Competition networks for grades 5-8.
 

3) Dec 1, 2010, 4:00-7:30pm: Wind Wisdom for School Power Naturally (for educators of grades K -6 Wind Wisdom (for educators in grades K-6): Gain a hands-on introduction to the technology and engineering involved in renewable wind energy and an exciting context for teaching scientific principles  related to properties of the wind, energy transformations and electricity. At the workshop, educators who serve students in grades K-6 will receive: Engaging, hands-on science and engineering activities that support New York State Learning Standards and Core Curriculum, addressing specific performance indicators, and enrich existing scholastic programming; Free wind energy education kit that includes a small, working model turbine from Kid Wind; Curricular units, Wind Wisdom for School Power Naturally K-4 & 5-6 for your classroom, center or institution
